The Loneliness of the Sea Bed

The Radio Plays

Edited by Hans Burkhard Schlichting
376pp, with an audio DVD

Possibly I am not a book author who sometimes writes a radio play, but an author of radio plays who occasionally attracts attention with a book. The author of these words has been prominent for more than thirty five years as a virtuoso radio artist and with the prize-winning Life and Death of the Cornet Player Bix Beiderbecke from North America wrote one of the most frequently broadcast radio plays in the German language. Ror Wolf’s pieces for radio are entertaining, experimental and daring; they juggle their material with a lightness of touch and are conceived as adventurous contributions to a greater freedom of the mind.

The present volume contains the trilogy In Search of Doctor Q (written 1969 to 1976), the “radio ballad” Life and Death of the Cornet Player Bix Beiderbecke from North America (1987) and the “Radio Journey” The Traversal of the Depths in Thirteen Dark Chapters (1997). In addition to the original recordings collage Banana Heinz (1984), The Loneliness of the Sea Bed was included for the first time so that – with the exception of the radio collages – all of Ror Wolf’s radio plays are brought together in a single volume for the first time.
